Disease description:

I recently underwent an ePTFE rhinoplasty and am somewhat concerned about whether the implant is stable inside my nose. I'm worried about the possibility of movement or shifting. Is it possible for an ePTFE nasal implant to move or become loose?

Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) rhinoplasty is a common cosmetic procedure that improves the nasal shape by implanting ePTFE material into the nose. It may feel loose initially but typically becomes stable and no longer moves after healing.

In the early postoperative period, due to the body's incomplete adaptation and the incomplete integration of the ePTFE with surrounding tissues, slight movement may occur, which is a normal postoperative phenomenon. As the ePTFE stabilizes, this movement generally disappears. The ePTFE is precisely positioned and fixed onto the nasal bones and cartilage to ensure its stability. If significant movement occurs, or if movement persists for a prolonged period after surgery, it may be due to improper placement, inadequate fixation, or external force affecting the implant.

Mild movement is usually not a concern and typically diminishes over time as healing progresses. However, if noticeable or persistent movement occurs, it is advisable to seek timely medical evaluation to identify the specific cause. If the movement results from improper placement or insufficient fixation of the ePTFE, corrective surgery may be necessary to reposition and secure the implant.
