I have a 30-year-old female friend who does not wish to become pregnant again, and her doctor recommended intrauterine device (IUD) placement. However, we don't know much about it. Could you please explain what "IUD placement" means?

Dr. Zhang Lu

Inserting an intrauterine device (IUD) refers to the placement of a contraceptive device into the uterine cavity of a woman to achieve a contraceptive effect.

The primary purpose of intrauterine device placement is to provide a long-term, effective, and reversible method of contraception. The contraceptive mechanisms of an IUD mainly include spermicidal effects, interference with embryo implantation, and suppression of ovulation. Some IUDs contain copper ions that damage the structure of sperm, rendering them incapable of fertilization. Additionally, as a foreign body, the IUD continuously stimulates the endometrium, causing an inflammatory reaction that is unfavorable for implantation of a fertilized egg.

Intrauterine device placement offers advantages such as reliable contraceptive effectiveness, long duration of action, and reversibility. Once inserted, it can remain effective for an extended period, reducing the need for frequent use of other contraceptive measures. However, some women may experience side effects such as increased menstrual bleeding, prolonged menstruation, or irregular bleeding.

After the procedure, women should rest and avoid strenuous physical activity and heavy labor. Sexual intercourse and tub bathing should be avoided for two weeks following IUD insertion to reduce the risk of infection.
