Disease description:

I have been feeling unwell lately, and my friend suggested that I try acupuncture, saying that it can help regulate my body. However, I'm a bit concerned and would like to ask the doctor: are there any risks associated with acupuncture? After all, needles are inserted into the body, and I'm worried it might have negative effects. Could you please explain in detail?

In general, if acupuncture is performed properly, it offers many health benefits. However, there may also be some risks, such as infection, tissue or organ damage, and fainting during acupuncture.

1. Risk of infection: If acupuncture instruments are not adequately sterilized or aseptic techniques are not followed during the procedure, pathogens such as bacteria and viruses may enter the body through the puncture sites, causing localized infections with symptoms including redness, swelling, pain, and fever. Severe cases may even lead to systemic infection.

2. Tissue or organ damage: The distribution of acupuncture points is complex, with important tissues such as blood vessels and nerves nearby. If the acupuncturist lacks technical proficiency, improper needle insertion angle or depth may cause damage to surrounding tissues. For example, inserting needles too deeply into chest or back points may injure the lungs and cause pneumothorax (collapsed lung); acupuncture at abdominal points may damage internal organs.

3. Fainting during acupuncture: Some individuals may experience fainting during acupuncture treatment. This may be related to the patient's mental tension, weak constitution, being in a fasting state, or excessive stimulation from the acupuncture technique. Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, palpitations, pallor, cold sweats, and in severe cases, even syncope (fainting).

Most of these risks can be effectively avoided by choosing a legitimate healthcare facility, qualified acupuncturists, and proper care before and after acupuncture sessions. If discomfort occurs after acupuncture, prompt medical attention should be sought.
