Grandma Wang always likes to wash and reuse face masks after using them once. It seems somewhat unhygienic. I would like to ask whether face masks can be reused.

Face masks are generally not recommended for reuse. Disposable medical masks and N95 masks are intended for single use under ideal conditions, to protect the wearer from airborne particles, viruses, bacteria, and other contaminants. During use, the filter and protective layers of the mask gradually accumulate contaminants, which can reduce their protective effectiveness. In addition, reusing masks may cause deformation or damage to the mask, further compromising its protective performance. Especially in high-risk environments such as during an infectious disease outbreak, reusing masks may increase the risk of infection.

After using a disposable mask, it should be immediately discarded into a designated trash bin to avoid environmental pollution caused by improper disposal. If the mask becomes damaged, contaminated, or if breathing resistance significantly increases during use, the mask should be replaced immediately with a new one. In high-risk settings such as hospitals or areas severely affected by an outbreak, strict adherence to mask usage guidelines is essential, ensuring that each time a mask is worn it is new and meets applicable standards. If mask reuse is necessary due to limited resources, it is important to ensure the mask remains clean, intact, and effective, and to properly clean and maintain it.
