Dr. Zhang Lu

Drinking tea during pregnancy can have various effects. Pregnant women have a faster metabolism and are prone to dehydration; the water in tea can help replenish bodily fluids. Additionally, fatigue is common during pregnancy, and moderate tea consumption may help relieve tiredness and maintain a better mental state. Certain components in tea can also promote gastrointestinal motility and improve digestive function. Antioxidants in tea can, to some extent, enhance the immune system of pregnant women.

However, tannic acid and caffeine in tea can easily bind with iron in the body and form substances that are difficult for the body to absorb, potentially leading to iron-deficiency anemia in pregnant women. This not only affects the mother's health but can also negatively impact fetal growth and development. Furthermore, stimulants like caffeine in tea can stimulate the nervous system, increasing heart rate and blood pressure, thereby加重 (adding burden to) the heart and kidneys, and potentially inducing pregnancy-induced hypertension and other related conditions.

Pregnant women should avoid drinking strong tea, as it contains higher levels of caffeine and tannic acid, making adverse effects more likely. At the same time, tea consumption should be controlled to avoid excessive intake of caffeine and other stimulants.
