What should a postpartum woman do if she has no breast milk?

Disease description:

I just gave birth and have no milk, which is very worrying. I've tried having the baby suck more and also drank soup, but still there's not much milk. I'd like to know what other methods can help stimulate milk production, and whether there could be an underlying health issue causing this?

Absence of breast milk in postpartum women, also known as insufficient milk secretion, should first be evaluated for possible physiological causes such as underdeveloped mammary glands or abnormal hormone levels. Blood tests may be necessary to assess hormone levels.

The mother should maintain a balanced diet with sufficient protein, vitamins, and minerals. Recommended foods include pig's trotter soup, rib soup, and crucian carp soup, all of which can help promote lactation. Encourage frequent and early breastfeeding, as regular nipple stimulation effectively promotes the secretion of prolactin and oxytocin from the pituitary gland—two crucial hormones for breast milk production.

Proper breastfeeding posture and frequency can enhance milk production. Guide the mother to adopt effective breastfeeding positions to ensure the baby suckles correctly. It is also recommended to breastfeed on demand and frequently stimulate the breasts to increase milk supply. Postpartum depression, anxiety, or insufficient social support may all affect milk secretion. Encourage active involvement from family members, provide emotional support, and introduce psychological counseling when appropriate.
