Is it necessary to fast before undergoing an NT scan?
My sister is pregnant and she needs to go to the hospital with me tomorrow for an NT scan. Does this examination require her to come on an empty stomach?
It is generally not necessary to fast before undergoing an NT scan. An NT scan is an ultrasound examination that measures the thickness of the fetal nuchal translucency and is primarily used to assess the risk of chromosomal or structural abnormalities in the fetus. This examination is usually performed between 11 and 13 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy. Since the NT scan is conducted via ultrasound, which typically does not require fasting, pregnant women do not need to remain fasting before the NT scan. Food and drink do not affect NT scan results, so pregnant women can eat and drink before the examination.
Although fasting is not required for the NT scan, pregnant women are advised to maintain a normal eating pattern before the scan, avoiding both overeating and excessive hunger, to prevent discomfort and interference with fetal activity and the smooth progress of the examination. Because the NT scan must be performed within a specific time window, pregnant women should schedule appointments in advance and arrive at the hospital on time. Before the scan, women can drink moderate amounts of water to fill the bladder slightly, which helps the ultrasound probe better visualize the fetus. If a pregnant woman needs to undergo other laboratory tests that require fasting, such as blood glucose, lipid profile, or liver and kidney function tests, alongside the NT scan, she should fast as instructed by the doctor and complete those tests before proceeding with the NT scan.
