Can patients with hyperthyroidism eat waxy corn?
A friend of mine has hyperthyroidism and really wants to eat sticky corn, but we are unsure whether sticky corn might affect their health. Could you please advise, Doctor, whether patients with hyperthyroidism can eat sticky corn?
Hyperthyroidism refers to an overactive thyroid condition. Patients with hyperthyroidism can eat waxy corn.
Dietary management is particularly important for patients with hyperthyroidism; they should avoid foods high in iodine, stimulatory foods, and those high in fat and calories. As a whole grain, waxy corn mainly contains nutrients such as carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamin E, potassium, phosphorus, iron, selenium, and other minerals, along with dietary fiber, vitamin B6, and niacin. These components do not directly affect the condition of patients with hyperthyroidism.
The iodine content in waxy corn is not high, so it does not increase the synthesis and secretion of thyroid hormones in patients with hyperthyroidism, nor does it worsen their condition. Furthermore, waxy corn is not a spicy or stimulating food, and therefore will not cause mental excitement or increased heart rate in patients, making it suitable for consumption by patients with hyperthyroidism. Additionally, waxy corn contains low levels of fat, most of which are unsaturated fatty acids, which are beneficial to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health and meet the dietary requirements of patients with hyperthyroidism.
Patients with hyperthyroidism should consume waxy corn in moderation. Because waxy corn has a high starch content, excessive consumption may cause indigestion or fluctuations in blood sugar levels.
