I just had cupping therapy yesterday. My friend's birthday is tonight, and we're planning to get together, but we might have some alcohol. I'm worried it might have adverse effects. May I ask if it's okay to drink alcohol after cupping therapy?

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapies, cupping is a method that uses physical means to promote blood circulation, relieve muscle tension, and improve localized pain. It is generally advised not to drink alcohol after cupping, as it may easily cause discomfort.

As a TCM therapy, cupping mainly achieves effects such as activating blood circulation to dissipate blood stasis, unblocking channels to relieve pain, and expelling wind-cold by creating negative pressure on the skin surface. This process promotes the flow of qi and blood within the body and regulates bodily functions. Alcohol consumption may produce a series of complex effects on the human body, as alcohol enters the bloodstream and is metabolized by the liver, influencing multiple body systems. Particularly after cupping, the body's circulation of qi and blood has already undergone certain regulation and stimulation. Drinking alcohol at this time may interfere with or disrupt the normal flow of qi and blood, thus affecting the therapeutic effectiveness of cupping. Additionally, alcohol's diuretic effect may lead to dehydration, further affecting normal metabolic and recovery mechanisms in the body.

Therefore, it is recommended not to consume alcohol after cupping, especially within 24 hours. Furthermore, one should keep warm and avoid catching a chill after cupping. The diet should be light and easily digestible; cold or irritating foods should be avoided to prevent adverse effects on health.
