How long does it take for hyaluronic acid in the jaw to soften?

Disease description:

I recently had a hyaluronic acid injection in my chin, but I still feel that my chin is somewhat stiff. I'm not sure whether this is normal or if something might be wrong. Therefore, I would like to ask the doctor: how long does it usually take for the chin to soften and return to a more natural state after hyaluronic acid injection?

Dr. Chen Lu

Under normal circumstances, after hyaluronic acid injection in the chin area, it usually takes about 1-2 weeks for the material to start softening.

It is normal to experience a certain degree of firmness following hyaluronic acid injection in the chin. This is because the newly injected hyaluronic acid forms a relatively stable structure within the tissue, and the surrounding tissue cells and fluids require some time to adapt to this new filler. Generally, this firm sensation will gradually diminish over the following weeks, as the hyaluronic acid integrates with the surrounding tissues, absorbs an appropriate amount of moisture, and becomes more natural in feel. During this period, patients may experience some swelling or mild discomfort in the chin area, which are considered normal reactions.

If the hyaluronic acid is injected into the area of the mandibular chin protrusion, particularly near or beneath the periosteum, the softening process may be relatively slower. This is due to the relatively reduced local pressure, tissue deformation, and movement in this region. In contrast, if the hyaluronic acid is placed within the subcutaneous tissue, specifically in the superficial dermis, it can absorb water more quickly, swell, and disperse into the surrounding tissues, thereby softening in a shorter period. Additionally, hyaluronic acid with larger molecules tends to soften more slowly, whereas smaller molecular weight hyaluronic acid softens more quickly.
