Hypothyroidism generally refers to an underactive thyroid. Whether iodine supplementation or iodine restriction is needed mainly depends on the underlying cause of the hypothyroidism.

If hypothyroidism is caused by iodine deficiency, appropriate iodine supplementation is necessary to promote thyroid hormone synthesis. For example, consuming iodine-rich foods such as kelp and nori may be beneficial. However, if hypothyroidism results from iodine excess or conditions such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, iodine restriction becomes necessary. In such cases, patients should avoid foods high in iodine to prevent additional strain on the thyroid gland. Furthermore, excessive iodine intake may worsen the condition in patients with autoimmune thyroid diseases like Hashimoto's disease, so high-iodine foods should be avoided.

Patients are advised to adjust iodine intake according to individual conditions. Generally, the iodine content in a normal diet is sufficient, and additional supplementation is unnecessary. Regular monitoring of thyroid function and iodine nutritional status, along with following medical advice regarding dietary adjustments or medication, is recommended. Moreover, any modification in iodine intake should strictly follow medical guidance to ensure the safety and effectiveness of treatment.
