Recently, I saw someone online talking about methods to terminate ventricular fibrillation. I would like to ask doctors, what is the most rapid and effective method to terminate ventricular fibrillation?

Doctor's answer (1)
Dr. Tian Hongbo

The fastest and most effective method to terminate ventricular fibrillation (VF) is electrical defibrillation. This method uses a specific device to generate an electrical current that directly counteracts VF, rapidly correcting the abnormal cardiac rhythm. For adult patients, monophasic defibrillation typically delivers 360 joules of energy, whereas biphasic defibrillators usually deliver between 120 to 200 joules. Defibrillation works by delivering a high-energy electric shock to the heart, instantly stopping all electrical activity and allowing the heart to re-establish a normal rhythm.

Ventricular fibrillation is a life-threatening arrhythmia in which the heart is unable to pump blood effectively, and immediate treatment is required to save the patient's life. Prior to defibrillation, ensure the scene is safe and that the patient's body is clear of any metal objects. Automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) or professional defibrillation equipment should be used. Once VF is confirmed, defibrillation should be performed immediately, as each minute of delay decreases the patient's chance of survival. Synchronized electrical defibrillation can restore normal cardiac rhythm in the shortest possible time, effectively preventing further deterioration of ventricular fibrillation and reducing the risk of patient mortality.
