Disease description:

I am 27 years old this year, currently 22 weeks pregnant, and this is my first pregnancy. My mother is somewhat worried and has been trying to nourish my body all day long. Recently, she also bought some Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) for me, saying that I should add some to my soup in the future. Is it safe to consume Korean ginseng during pregnancy?

Pregnant women can consume ginseng (Korean ginseng) in moderation. Korean ginseng is known for its effects of greatly replenishing vital energy, strengthening the spleen and nourishing the lungs, promoting the production of body fluids to relieve thirst, and calming the mind to improve mental clarity. It contains rich nutrients such as ginsenosides, polysaccharides, and vitamin B1. Appropriate supplementation during pregnancy can help provide essential nutrients, promote fetal growth and development, enhance pregnant women's cognitive function and memory, and help alleviate fatigue and anxiety during pregnancy.

However, Korean ginseng is warm in nature and excessive consumption may cause heatiness, leading to symptoms such as nosebleeds, dry mouth, and constipation. Therefore, it is recommended that pregnant women consume no more than 3–5 grams per day and avoid long-term or excessive use. Individual body constitutions vary, and some pregnant women may already have conditions such as yin deficiency with internal heat, in which case taking Korean ginseng may worsen physical discomfort. Thus, it is best to consult a physician before consumption to ensure suitability based on individual body constitution. To balance nutrition and taste, pregnant women can combine Korean ginseng with other ingredients such as chicken or lean meat to prepare nourishing soups or stews. This not only enhances the nutritional value of the meal but also improves its flavor and palatability.
