It is generally normal for pregnant women to wake up in the middle of the night during the late stages of pregnancy and be unable to fall back asleep. In the later stages of pregnancy, as the fetus continues to grow, the uterus enlarges and exerts pressure on the bladder and digestive organs, causing symptoms such as nocturia, heartburn, back pain, leg discomfort, and edema. These pregnancy-related symptoms can interfere with sleep. Additionally, hormonal changes in late pregnancy, the development of complications such as gestational diabetes and hypertension, as well as psychological factors like excessive worry and anxiety, may also contribute to difficulty falling back asleep after waking up during the night.

Pregnant women can try sleeping in the left lateral position, which helps relieve pressure of the uterus on blood vessels and nerves, thereby promoting better circulation and oxygen supply. At the same time, they should avoid maintaining the same sleeping posture for long periods and should change positions appropriately during sleep to relieve muscle tension. Pregnant women should avoid using electronic devices before bedtime, as blue light can suppress melatonin secretion and interfere with sleep. Additionally, they should avoid overeating at dinner and consuming spicy, greasy, irritating foods or caffeinated beverages. Drinking a cup of warm milk before bedtime may help relax the body and promote sleep. If insomnia persists or becomes severe, medical attention should be sought promptly.
