In general, chemical peeling with alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) can improve acne scars and pigmentation to some extent, although the effects are limited. AHA chemical peeling is a cosmetic treatment that promotes skin renewal and removes the aged stratum corneum by applying high-concentration AHAs. Utilizing the chemical exfoliating effect of AHAs, this treatment accelerates the shedding of the stratum corneum and enhances the turnover rate of keratinocytes and some superficial epidermal cells, thereby promoting the proliferation of elastic fibers within the dermis.

Chemical peeling with AHA primarily affects the epidermis. For superficial acne scars, it may offer some improvement through enhanced stratum corneum renewal and collagen synthesis in the dermis. However, for deeper acne scars, the effectiveness may be limited because AHA peeling cannot penetrate deeply into the dermis to facilitate significant repair. Regarding acne pigmentation, AHA peeling can help to some extent by promoting desquamation of the stratum corneum and reducing pigmentation. It can break down pigment granules and reduce melanin deposition, thus lightening acne marks.

However, it is important to note that AHA chemical peeling is not suitable for everyone. Prior to treatment, consultation with a qualified physician is necessary to assess individual skin conditions and potential treatment risks. Patients should avoid purchasing AHA products on their own for peeling treatments, as improper use may lead to skin damage or other adverse reactions. After treatment, patients should follow their physician's instructions for proper skin care to support recovery and maintenance.
