Are there any side effects of laser scar removal?
I am 22 years old this year, and I've always had a small scar on my hand. I heard that lasers can remove scars, and I would like to know whether laser scar removal has any side effects.

In general, laser scar removal works by using laser energy of specific wavelengths that act on the skin to stimulate collagen regeneration, thereby improving the appearance of scars. There are some side effects associated with laser scar removal, mainly including redness and pain, dryness and tightness of the skin, excessive scar formation, pigmentation, and risk of infection.
One of the most common side effects after the procedure is redness and mild pain in the treated area, caused by the thermal effect of the laser energy on the skin tissue. Usually, these symptoms will subside naturally within a few days. Laser treatment can damage the stratum corneum, accelerating water evaporation from the skin and possibly causing dryness and tightness. In severe cases, it may even lead to skin inflammation. When the laser acts on scar tissue, it may trigger an inflammatory response and stimulate fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis, resulting in the original scar becoming more noticeable or new abnormal elevations forming.
After laser treatment, the skin may produce melanin as a self-protective mechanism, leading to uneven skin tone or the appearance of new pigmented spots. This is usually due to stimulation of the subcutaneous tissue, and improper sun protection or post-treatment care during the healing process. Laser scar removal is an invasive treatment; if aseptic techniques are not strictly followed during treatment or post-treatment care is inappropriate, infection may occur.
Prior to undergoing laser scar removal, one should fully understand their scar condition and treatment needs, and choose a qualified medical facility for treatment. After treatment, patients should follow the doctor's instructions for proper care, such as avoiding direct sun exposure and refraining from using cosmetics containing irritating ingredients.
