I just had a color ultrasound done, and the doctor didn't clean off the liquid properly. On my way home, I felt chilly and wondered whether residual liquid left on the skin might have any adverse effects.

Generally, if the liquid used during a color ultrasound examination is not completely wiped off, it will not have any significant impact.

If the ultrasound coupling gel is not fully removed after the exam, it typically does not cause noticeable effects on the body. During a color ultrasound, doctors usually apply a transparent gel—known as coupling agent—to the probe or the patient's skin. This gel improves the efficiency of sound wave transmission between the probe and the skin, reducing interference caused by air and thereby producing clearer images.

The main components of the coupling agent are water and some harmless additives. It is generally non-toxic, non-irritating, not significantly absorbed by the skin, and does not cause serious skin reactions. It can be naturally removed through regular cleaning. However, if the coupling agent remains on the skin for a prolonged period, it may cause some individuals mild discomfort, such as a sticky sensation or slight irritation.

If residual coupling agent is noticed, it is recommended to promptly wash the affected area with water and keep the skin clean and dry to ensure comfort and safety after the examination.
