How many days does it take for the breasts to soften after stopping breastfeeding?
I'm currently weaning, and my breasts have been very swollen for the past few days. I'd like to ask, how many more days will this swelling last before my breasts become soft again?
In general, the breasts will gradually soften within 7 to 10 days after the onset of weaning, although the exact timeframe may vary from person to person.
During the early phase of weaning, the breasts may feel tender and swollen due to milk accumulation. This discomfort is usually most noticeable during the first few days of weaning. However, as time progresses, typically around 7 to 10 days, the breasts will begin to soften and the pain and swelling will gradually subside. This occurs because milk production gradually decreases over time, resulting in reduced pressure within the breasts.
To help alleviate breast discomfort during weaning, it is recommended to minimize breast stimulation, such as avoiding squeezing, massaging, or applying heat therapy. Instead, applying a cold compress or ice pack gently to the breasts for about 15 to 20 minutes at a time, multiple times daily, may help reduce swelling and pain. Wearing a supportive and comfortable bra is advised, while underwire or tight-fitting bras should be avoided as they may worsen discomfort. Limiting fluid intake, especially avoiding excessive water or other liquids, may also help reduce milk production.
If any physical discomfort or symptoms arise, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly and follow the healthcare provider's instructions.
