MERS stands for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, a severe respiratory illness caused by the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV).

The disease is primarily transmitted through the respiratory tract. After infection, it can cause symptoms such as fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. Severe cases may progress to acute respiratory distress syndrome and multiple organ failure, with a high mortality rate. It is mainly spread through droplets and close contact, with limited person-to-person transmission capability, although large-scale outbreaks are unlikely.

Hosts of the MERS virus include animals such as dromedary camels. Humans may become infected through contact with infected animals or their secretions, and there is also potential for human-to-human transmission. Currently, vaccines and specific antiviral drugs for MERS are still under development. Preventive measures mainly include enhancing personal hygiene, avoiding contact with infection sources, and improving public health surveillance capabilities.

For infected individuals, primary treatment involves supportive care and management based on clinical conditions. If symptoms of illness develop, it is recommended to seek medical attention at a hospital promptly and follow medical advice for appropriate management.
