What does it mean if body temperature is below 36℃?
This morning I took my temperature and found it was only 35.8°C, which is a bit low. I haven't been doing anything unusual lately, so why has my temperature dropped below 36°C?
A body temperature below 36℃ may be caused by improper measurement, environmental factors, constitutional factors, or disease-related factors.
Malfunction of the thermometer or incorrect measurement techniques may lead to low readings; it is recommended to ensure proper use of the thermometer and retake the measurement. Prolonged exposure to cold environments may cause failure of the body's temperature regulation mechanism, resulting in a low body temperature. Some individuals may naturally have a lower baseline temperature, which is generally not a concern as long as no other symptoms or discomfort are present.
Certain populations may have lower baseline temperatures—for example, elderly individuals with slower metabolisms or those whose temperatures may drop during nighttime sleep. If no discomfort is experienced, special treatment is usually unnecessary. Endocrine disorders such as hypothyroidism or anemia may also lead to a decreased metabolic rate and lower body temperature. Medical evaluation is required, and treatment should be conducted under a doctor's guidance. Malnutrition or prolonged starvation may also result in a reduced body temperature.
If a body temperature below 36℃ is detected, prompt medical attention is advised. Treatment may include warming measures, caloric supplementation, correction of electrolyte imbalances, and, when necessary, hospitalization for observation.
