Sore throat is a common symptom that can be caused by various factors, including unhealthy habits, environmental factors, allergies, and throat-related conditions.

Unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as staying up late, consuming spicy foods, or excessive talking—particularly among professional groups like teachers and singers—can all contribute to throat pain. In dry, hazy, or dusty environments, the throat may become irritated and painful.

Allergens such as pollen, dust mites, and pet dander can trigger sore throats. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) often involves the backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus and throat, causing inflammation and pain. Bacterial infections, such as strep-induced tonsillitis, can also lead to throat pain. Chronic pharyngitis and acute epiglottitis are among the throat conditions that may cause sore throat.

If a sore throat is accompanied by fever, difficulty swallowing, breathing difficulties, or lasts longer than one week, prompt medical attention is advised to rule out serious conditions and receive appropriate treatment. It is also important to adjust lifestyle habits, maintain suitable indoor humidity and temperature, avoid consuming irritating foods, and follow a light diet.
