Can Shugan Yiyang Capsules and Liuwei Dihuang Pills be taken together?
I am a 40-year-old male. Recently, I have been experiencing low energy levels and weakness in my waist and knees. My doctor prescribed two medications: Shugan Yiyang Capsules and Liuwei Dihuang Pills. I am not sure whether these two medications can be taken together.

Shugan Yiyang Capsules and Liuwei Dihuang Pills can be used in combination, but selection should be based on the individual's constitution and syndrome differentiation. Shugan Yiyang Capsules are primarily indicated for symptoms caused by liver qi stagnation and liver depression with spleen deficiency, such as emotional depression, chest tightness, and loss of appetite. They function to soothe the liver, relieve depression, strengthen the spleen, and invigorate qi. In contrast, Liuwei Dihuang Pills are a classic formula for nourishing kidney yin and are commonly used to treat symptoms caused by kidney yin deficiency, including dizziness, tinnitus, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, and premature ejaculation. If a patient simultaneously presents with liver depression and deficiency of both yin and yang in the kidney—such as emotional depression, cold pain in the lower back and knees, tidal fever, and night sweats—the combined use of these two formulas can address both yin and yang deficiencies. However, if the condition involves only yin deficiency with fire hyperactivity or yang deficiency without signs of yin deficiency, medication adjustments are necessary.
Prior to medication, the TCM syndrome pattern must be clearly identified by a physician to determine whether combination therapy is appropriate. If taking these medications without medical supervision, it is recommended to separate the dosages by 1–2 hours to reduce gastrointestinal burden. During treatment, spicy and greasy foods should be avoided. Monitor for adverse effects such as dry mouth, tidal fever, or diarrhea, and discontinue the medication promptly and consult a physician if these occur. Emotional regulation and moderate exercise during treatment can help improve liver qi stagnation and kidney deficiency. If symptoms persist or worsen, follow-up visits are necessary to adjust the treatment plan and avoid long-term combination therapy, which could lead to imbalance or excessive accumulation of therapeutic effects.
