In general, it is safe to apply povidone-iodine to a baby's navel.

Povidone-iodine is a commonly used topical disinfectant, primarily composed of elemental iodine and polyvinylpyrrolidone. It has broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties and is low in toxicity and non-corrosive, making it suitable for direct application on skin and mucous membranes for disinfection. A baby's skin is delicate, but using povidone-iodine for navel disinfection is acceptable, provided it is done correctly to avoid unnecessary irritation or harm to the baby.

Before handling the baby's navel, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water to reduce the risk of bacterial transmission. Use a clean cotton swab dipped in povidone-iodine to gently wipe the base of the umbilical cord and the surrounding skin, moving in a spiral motion outward from the navel. Avoid applying the povidone-iodine directly onto the umbilical stump itself. Use a new cotton swab each time to prevent cross-infection. If the baby's navel becomes red, swollen, inflamed, or bleeds, seek medical attention promptly and follow the doctor's recommendations for appropriate medication treatment.

In daily care, parents should closely monitor any changes in the baby's navel to ensure the infant's health and safety.
