How many days does a fever from the flu usually last?
Recently contracted the flu, also have a fever, feeling very unwell. May I ask how many days does it usually take for the flu fever to resolve?
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is an acute respiratory infectious disease caused by the influenza virus. Its main symptoms include high fever, fatigue, headache, cough, and body aches. In most patients, flu-related fever typically lasts 1 to 3 days, and recovery generally occurs within 3 to 7 days with timely treatment, adequate rest, and hydration. However, in elderly individuals, children, or those with chronic illnesses, the duration of flu symptoms may be prolonged and recovery slower.
Treatment for influenza primarily involves symptomatic management, including sufficient rest, increased fluid intake, and use of fever-reducing medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen to alleviate symptoms, as directed by a healthcare provider. It is also important to maintain good indoor air circulation and avoid cross-infection. In certain cases, doctors may prescribe antiviral medications such as oseltamivir to shorten the duration of illness and reduce symptom severity. Immediate medical attention should be sought if symptoms such as difficulty breathing, persistent high fever, or severe chest pain occur.
To prevent influenza, annual vaccination is recommended, along with good personal hygiene practices such as frequent handwashing and wearing masks.
