Patients are advised to avoid alcohol consumption during the use of cephalosporin antibiotics and for at least 72 hours after discontinuation. Cephalosporin drugs may interact with alcohol, potentially triggering a disulfiram-like reaction, characterized by symptoms such as headache, nausea, palpitations, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, and a drop in blood pressure. In severe cases, this reaction can be life-threatening. However, if patients have impaired liver or kidney function, the metabolism of cephalosporins may be slower. In such cases, it is recommended to wait one week after discontinuation before consuming alcohol.

Although individual differences exist in drug metabolism rates, for safety reasons, this general guideline should be followed. Patients must strictly adhere to medical instructions and must not alter their medication regimen or ignore contraindications to ensure treatment effectiveness and personal health. Alcohol consumption should be avoided during treatment and for a short period afterward until a physician confirms that alcohol intake is safe.
