Can pregnant women take Banlangen (Isatis root)?
I am a 26-year-old pregnant woman, 6 weeks into my pregnancy. Recently, I've had some discomfort in my throat. A friend recommended taking Banlangen Granules, but I'm unsure if it's safe. Can I take this medication?

Banlangen, also known as Banlangen Granules, can be taken by pregnant women during pregnancy, but should be used cautiously under medical guidance. Banlangen Granules are a type of traditional Chinese patent medicine, and their components may affect fetal development through the bloodstream. Currently, sufficient clinical research is lacking to confirm their long-term safety for pregnant women and fetuses. Certain herbal ingredients may stimulate uterine contractions, increasing the risk of miscarriage or premature birth. If used for the prevention or treatment of colds, decisions should be made based on symptom severity and a doctor's evaluation; self-medication is not advised.
Unless necessary, use is best avoided. Mild discomfort can be relieved through physical measures such as drinking more water and maintaining humidified air. When cold symptoms are apparent, priority should be given to vitamin C or physical fever-reduction methods approved by a doctor. If medication is required, an obstetrician must confirm the safety of the ingredients before use, in accordance with medical instructions, to avoid formulations containing other unknown components. Caution is also advised during lactation; breastfeeding should be suspended during medication. Pay attention to bodily reactions during daily activities. If abdominal pain, bleeding, or abnormal fetal movement occurs after taking the medication, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention. Record the time and dosage of each administration, and inform your doctor of your medication history during regular prenatal checkups to ensure the health of both mother and baby.
