Disease description:

I always eat out and drink alcohol frequently. I'm also a bit overweight. My toe has been hurting for the past couple of days, and after going to the hospital, I found out my uric acid levels are high. I'm really craving steamed clam vermicelli noodles right now. Could you please tell me, can people with high uric acid eat clams?

Patients with high uric acid levels are not advised to consume clams, as this may easily lead to increased uric acid levels.

Clams, also known as cockles, belong to the category of seafood and have relatively high purine content. Purine is a precursor of uric acid, and excessive intake of purines can increase uric acid production in the body, potentially causing elevated uric acid levels. Therefore, patients with high uric acid levels should avoid high-purine foods, including seafood such as clams, organ meats, and red meat.

Thus, in daily diet, patients with high uric acid levels should limit their intake of high-purine foods to prevent worsening of their condition. This does not mean these foods must be completely avoided, but rather consumed in moderation. It is advisable to choose low-purine foods, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products, to help maintain stable uric acid levels. If in doubt, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional and develop a personalized dietary plan.
