Disease description:

I am a 25-year-old female. A few days ago, my arm was scratched by my pet cat at home. The skin was slightly broken but there was no bleeding. I know that rabies vaccination is required for dog bites, but I'm not sure whether cat scratches also require it. Do I need to receive a rabies vaccine after being scratched by a cat?

Whether or not a rabies vaccine is required after being scratched by a cat depends on the condition of the wound and the cat's health status. If the cat is a healthy, domestic pet that has already received rabies vaccinations, the risk of contracting rabies is low. However, if the cat's health status is unknown or it is a stray cat, the risk of infection increases, and it is advisable to receive the rabies vaccine promptly to ensure safety. Rabies is almost incurable once symptoms develop; therefore, strict preventive measures are necessary. Even with minor abrasions, the virus can potentially enter the body through broken skin.

Immediately after being scratched, thoroughly wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and disinfect it with iodine or alcohol. Seek professional medical advice promptly at a hospital or disease control center to determine whether rabies vaccination is necessary. In high-risk situations, a tetanus vaccine or other prophylactic medications might also be required. To effectively reduce the risk of such incidents, avoid overly aggressive interactions with cats, regularly vaccinate pets, and maintain their overall health.
