Can running cause a recurrence of gout?
I've had gout attacks before. Recently, I wanted to lose weight by running, but I'm worried it might trigger a recurrence of gout. Can running really cause gout to flare up again?

In general, running does not directly trigger gout recurrence, but excessive exercise may increase the risk.
Gout is a type of arthritis caused by elevated levels of uric acid in the body. Its main symptoms include redness, swelling, warmth, and pain in the joints, commonly affecting the big toe, although other joints may also be involved. Moderate aerobic exercise, such as running, can improve metabolic rate, promote blood circulation, help control weight and lower blood pressure, all of which are beneficial for reducing uric acid levels and thus beneficial for patients with gout.
However, if the exercise is high-intensity or excessive, especially anaerobic exercise, it may cause muscle damage and increase lactic acid production in the body. Lactic acid can inhibit the kidneys' excretion of uric acid, leading to elevated uric acid levels and possibly triggering a gout attack. Therefore, gout patients should avoid strenuous exercise or prolonged running in daily life, and choose appropriate exercise intensity and duration based on their own conditions.
Gout patients should maintain healthy lifestyle habits, such as eating a balanced diet, controlling body weight, limiting alcohol consumption, etc., which also help prevent gout recurrence.
