Disease description:

I am the mother of a newborn baby who is 10 days old. My baby's jaundice level is somewhat high. I heard from the elders that boiling water with Gardenia (Huang Zhi Zi) and using it to bathe the baby can help reduce jaundice. I want to try this method but am unsure about its effectiveness. Can bathing a baby in water boiled with Gardenia help alleviate jaundice?

Using Gardenia (Cape Jasmine) fruit boiled water for bathing has limited effect on reducing jaundice. Neonatal jaundice is primarily caused by elevated levels of bilirubin in the body. Gardenia, a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, is known for its functions of clearing heat, removing fire toxins, and detoxification. It can help relieve internal heat, protect the liver, alleviate pain, and reduce swelling. Although it has traditional benefits in clearing heat and promoting metabolism, simply using it for bathing cannot effectively lower bilirubin concentration in the blood. Furthermore, the skin's ability to absorb herbal effects is limited, making it difficult to achieve therapeutic goals. If jaundice persists or bilirubin levels remain high, scientific treatments such as phototherapy or medication should be used.

It is recommended to follow medical advice first, monitor the baby's jaundice progression, and take appropriate measures. If considering herbal bathing, ensure the herbs are from a safe source and the procedure is performed under professional guidance to avoid irritating the baby's delicate skin. Also, ensure the baby receives adequate feeding to promote bowel movements and help eliminate excess bilirubin. Monitor the baby's mental state, skin color, and urine and stool output regularly, and seek medical attention promptly if any abnormalities occur. Traditional methods can serve as complementary approaches but should not replace standard medical care.
