Can laser surgery be performed on nearsighted eyes?
I am 19 years old this year. I have been nearsighted since I started school. I would like to know whether I can undergo laser surgery for myopia.

In general, laser surgery can be performed to correct myopia (nearsightedness), but certain conditions must be met and a preoperative evaluation is required.
Myopia laser surgery primarily uses femtosecond or excimer lasers to reshape the corneal stroma, thereby adjusting the corneal thickness and curvature, enabling light to focus accurately on the retina, and thus achieving vision correction. Types of myopia laser surgery include all-femtosecond laser surgery, half-femtosecond laser surgery, surface ablation laser surgery, and customized laser surgery.
The effectiveness of myopia laser surgery is generally good, with most patients experiencing significant improvement in vision after surgery. Many patients may even be free from glasses or contact lenses. Additionally, the recovery period is relatively short, and patients usually can resume normal daily activities and work within a few days.
However, although myopia laser surgery is generally safe, there are still certain risks involved, such as infection, corneal flap displacement, and dry eyes. Therefore, before deciding to undergo surgery, patients should visit a qualified medical facility for comprehensive eye examinations and evaluations by professional ophthalmologists to determine their suitability for the procedure. Moreover, postoperative care and follow-up visits must strictly follow medical advice to ensure surgical outcomes and ocular health.
