For redness and swelling caused by insect bites in infants, calamine lotion can be applied for relief. If localized redness and swelling occur, halometasone ointment, mometasone furoate ointment, or desonide cream may be used. Local cold compresses also can help alleviate swelling and pain. When the skin becomes broken, it is important not to scratch in order to prevent infection. Topical disinfection with povidone-iodine also can be performed. Mosquito prevention measures should be emphasized during this period.
