Dental prostheses are generally made from materials such as resins, metals, ceramics, and composites.

Resin materials are the most commonly used type of dental prosthetic material. They are relatively low-cost and can mimic the color and texture of natural teeth. However, their durability is relatively poor, and they are prone to wear. Metallic materials include stainless steel, nickel-chromium alloys, cobalt-chromium alloys, and titanium alloys. These materials are commonly used to fabricate clasps, rests, and frameworks for removable dentures, as well as metal crowns and bridges for fixed prostheses. Among them, gold alloys are known for their hardness being close to that of natural teeth, offering greater comfort during chewing.

Ceramic materials include porcelain and zirconia, which offer good aesthetics and wear resistance. Their color and translucency closely resemble those of natural teeth, making them suitable for patients with high aesthetic demands. However, they are more expensive and may require more extensive tooth preparation. Composite materials combine the advantages of both resins and ceramics, offering both aesthetics and durability, with costs between those of resin and all-ceramic prostheses. For example, metal-ceramic crowns consist of a metal layer and an outer ceramic layer, combining the strength of metal with the aesthetics of ceramic.

When selecting dental prosthetic materials, a comprehensive consideration should be given to the patient's oral condition, financial capacity, aesthetic needs, and the dentist's recommendations.
