Is it safe to sleep with orthodontic wax in place?
Just got braces on, my mouth is sore from rubbing, so I used orthodontic wax. I'm worried about it falling off while sleeping at night, but also concerned about potential issues from wearing it continuously. Is it okay to sleep with orthodontic wax in place?
In general, orthodontic wax can be worn while sleeping.
The main components of orthodontic wax are paraffin wax and beeswax, which are safe and harmless. Even if accidentally ingested by the patient, these components typically do not cause significant adverse reactions. Additionally, orthodontic wax helps reduce friction between the braces and the teeth, protecting the teeth and preventing irritation to the oral mucosa that may lead to mouth ulcers.
However, orthodontic wax may become dislodged during sleep due to the effects of saliva or sleeping position, thereby losing its protective function. Moreover, if orthodontic wax remains in the mouth for an extended period, it may compromise oral hygiene by allowing food debris and bacteria to accumulate, increasing the risk of dental caries and periodontal disease. It is recommended to thoroughly clean the mouth upon waking in the morning, including removing any residual orthodontic wax, and follow normal oral care procedures such as brushing and flossing to maintain oral health.
During the use of orthodontic wax, the orthodontic appliances should also be regularly checked and cleaned. Prolonged continuous use of orthodontic wax should be avoided to prevent compromising the orthodontic results or oral hygiene.
