Disease description:

My baby has a cold, and sometimes develops a fever. The doctor said it's a cold caused by exposure to cold pathogen (wind-cold). What is the difference between wind-cold and wind-heat types of common cold in children?

Dr. Zhou Xiaofeng

The distinction between cold-induced and heat-induced common colds in children lies in their different causes, symptoms, and treatment approaches. Cold-induced common cold in children is usually caused by exposure to cold wind. Patients typically exhibit mild fever and produce thin, white phlegm. Treatment generally involves taking warm-dispersing and exterior-resolving medications under a doctor's guidance, such as Yinqiao Jiedu Pian (Lonicerae and Forsythiae Detoxifying Tablets) or Fengfeng Tongsheng Wan (Wind-dispelling and Saint-soothing Pills). Heat-induced common cold is typically caused by exposure to external heat wind. Patients often experience high fever, dry mouth, dark yellow urine, and thick yellow phlegm. Treatment generally involves taking cool-dispersing and exterior-resolving medications under a doctor's guidance, such as Qingre Jiedu Koufuye (Heat-clearing and Detoxifying Oral Liquid) or Niuhuang Jiedu Pian (Calculus Bovis Detoxifying Tablets). However, it is recommended that children should be at least 3 years old before using Niuhuang Jiedu Pian.
