The child's yellow and thick nasal discharge along with cough may be caused by chronic rhinitis or bacterial infection of the upper respiratory tract. If it is due to chronic rhinitis, medications such as budesonide nasal spray can be used under a doctor's guidance for relief; however, this medication is only suitable for children aged 6 years or older. If the symptoms are caused by a bacterial infection of the upper respiratory tract, anti-inflammatory treatment with medications such as amoxicillin-clavulanate potassium granules may be taken as directed by a physician.
