Disease description:

I am a 32-year-old male. My recent physical examination report states "sinus rhythm," but I don't quite understand what this means. I generally don't experience any significant discomfort, although occasionally I feel my heart beating slightly faster than usual. Is sinus rhythm normal?

Dr. Tian Hongbo

Sinus rhythm is the normal cardiac rhythm, indicating that the heart's pace is controlled by the sinoatrial node, which is a fundamental characteristic of a healthy heart. The sinoatrial node is the heart's natural pacemaker, responsible for generating regular electrical signals that cause the heart to beat rhythmically. In most people, the sinus rhythm rate at rest ranges between 60 and 100 beats per minute; a rate below 60 may indicate bradycardia, while a rate above 100 could suggest tachycardia. If a medical examination report indicates sinus rhythm without other abnormal descriptions, it is generally not a cause for concern. However, occasional increases in heart rate can be related to stress, physical activity, caffeine intake, or emotional fluctuations.

If you still have concerns about your heart rhythm, you can further assess your health status through monitoring and lifestyle adjustments. It is recommended to measure your heart rate regularly, especially to observe whether it remains within the normal range while at rest. Avoid excessive fatigue, reduce intake of coffee and alcohol, and maintain moderate exercise to enhance cardiovascular function. If symptoms such as palpitations, chest tightness, dizziness, or other discomforts occur, seek medical attention promptly for an electrocardiogram or other relevant examinations to rule out potential issues.
