Is a vision of 4.8 requires wearing glasses?

Disease description:

Visual acuity during the physical exam is 4.8. The blackboard appears slightly blurry, but I'm afraid that if I start wearing glasses, I won't be able to take them off eventually. Do I actually need to wear glasses? Will my vision get worse if I don't wear them?

In general, a visual acuity of 4.8 may require corrective lenses, but this should be determined based on individual circumstances.

A visual acuity of 4.8 typically indicates vision slightly below the normal level, possibly corresponding to about 150 degrees of myopia. However, this level of vision does not necessarily mean that glasses must be worn. In adolescents, a visual acuity of 4.8 might suggest the presence of refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. In such cases, it is recommended to visit an ophthalmology department at a hospital for a detailed refraction examination to determine whether true myopia exists before deciding on corrective lenses.

However, if a visual acuity of 4.8 does not significantly affect daily life and work, and there is minimal visual demand, one may choose not to wear glasses. If the vision loss is caused by eye diseases such as keratitis, glaucoma, or other reasons, the underlying cause should be treated first, rather than simply considering corrective lenses. In such situations, wearing glasses may not address the root problem and could potentially delay appropriate treatment.

In daily life, it is recommended to have regular eye examinations to ensure eye health and good visual quality.
