Dr. Zhang Lu

NT refers to the Nuchal Translucency scan, a method of measuring the thickness of subcutaneous fluid accumulation in the fetal neck using ultrasound. The NT scan is usually performed in early pregnancy, approximately between 11 and 14 weeks of gestation. The primary purpose of this examination is to assess the risk of chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus, such as Down syndrome. The higher the NT measurement, the greater the likelihood of chromosomal or other structural abnormalities in the fetus. Combining the mother's age with results from other blood tests can provide a more accurate risk assessment.

Prior to undergoing an NT scan, it is recommended to schedule an appointment at a specialized hospital or clinic in advance and ensure the examination is completed within the optimal time window. During the scan, the doctor will use an ultrasound device to measure the nuchal translucency and record the relevant data. If the NT value is elevated, the doctor may recommend further diagnostic tests, such as amniocentesis or non-invasive prenatal genetic testing (NIPT), to confirm the fetal condition. Additionally, maintaining a positive mindset and healthy lifestyle, along with regular prenatal checkups, can help detect and manage potential issues promptly. If you have any questions or concerns, it is important to communicate with your doctor in a timely manner to receive professional advice and support.
