What is Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS)?

Oral rehydration salts (ORS) are commonly used to replenish sodium, potassium, and water. They are a compound preparation containing sodium chloride, potassium chloride, glucose, and sodium citrate. ORS is primarily indicated for the replacement of electrolytes and water, supplying the body with sodium and potassium ions, which play a crucial role in maintaining plasma osmotic pressure. During diarrhea or excessive sweating, the body may lose sodium and potassium ions; therefore, external supplementation of these electrolytes is recommended. ORS effectively fulfills this purpose.
