Symptoms of Bowlegs in Infants
Disease description:
I just gave birth and noticed my baby’s legs aren’t straight—could this be a sign of infant bowlegs?
Symptoms of infantile bowlegs (genu varum) include inward knee angulation (knee varus), inward foot rotation (pes varus), and a noticeable gap between the knees when the child stands with feet together. Additionally, the legs may not be able to fully touch or align at the knees. Infantile bowlegs are commonly associated with calcium and vitamin deficiencies—particularly vitamin D—and in severe cases, may indicate rickets, which manifests as a gap between the knees when standing. Calcium supplementation, along with appropriate vitamin supplementation, should be undertaken under the guidance of a physician.
