Syphilis is primarily caused by prolonged exposure of the genital area to a viral (note: syphilis is actually caused by the bacterium *Treponema pallidum*, not a virus) infection environment. This can lead to various infections affecting the entire genital region. In later stages, individuals may gradually experience increasing pain; if left untreated over time, syphilis may develop.
