What does “high-level quadriplegia” mean?
Disease description:
At the hospital, I heard the doctor say that the patient in the neighboring ward has high-level quadriplegia. What does “high-level quadriplegia” mean?
High-level paraplegia refers to paralysis resulting from spinal cord lesions occurring at a relatively high level—specifically, above the second thoracic vertebra (T2). Most cases of high-level paraplegia are caused by trauma and are characterized by motor dysfunction and autonomic nervous system impairment. Prolonged bed rest further leads to a range of complications, and the majority of affected patients have a poor prognosis.
