Thickened toenails may be treated with topical antifungal medications, such as amorolfine nail lacquer or naftifine-ketoconazole cream. Thickening of the toenails is commonly caused by fungal infection—often referred to as onychomycosis (“gray nail”). Wearing overly tight shoes can also contribute to nail thickening. It is recommended to change socks and shoes frequently, and to avoid sharing foot basins with family members when washing feet.
