How is bone age measured?
Disease description:
I always feel that my son is shorter than other children his age, and I’d like to assess his bone age through some method. How is bone age measured?
Bone age is typically assessed using radiographic imaging. This method allows for accurate evaluation of skeletal development at various anatomical sites related to height and enables monitoring of overall growth status. Bone age can be determined by examining radiographs of the hand and wrist joints; specifically, a left wrist radiograph—commonly obtained in the Department of General Internal Medicine—can reveal whether the epiphyseal growth plates have fused (i.e., closed).
