Is it better to lie flat or lie prone when you’ve strained your lower back?
Disease description:
I accidentally strained my lower back while working out. My doctor advised bed rest—I’d like to ask whether it’s better to lie flat on my back or lie face down.
For a lumbar strain (“slipped” or “sprained” waist), lying supine (flat on the back) is generally recommended. After such an injury, bed rest is necessary, and proper positioning while lying down is crucial. Under normal circumstances, lying supine is preferable to lying prone (on the stomach). Only in the supine position can the lower back align evenly with the bed surface—this promotes recovery and helps alleviate symptoms. In contrast, lying prone may overstrain the lumbar region and trigger muscle spasms, potentially worsening the condition. It is best to consult your treating physician for guidance on the correct sleeping posture.
