What does it mean when there are plaques in the arteries?
Disease description:
I undergo a physical examination every year. This year’s report indicates the presence of arterial plaques. Could you please explain what “arterial plaques” means?
If a physical examination reveals plaques in the arteries, it indicates the early onset of atherosclerosis. As plaque accumulation increases over time, it may progressively develop into full-blown atherosclerosis. Patients found to have arterial plaques should actively manage their blood lipid levels. Elevated cholesterol levels in the body predispose individuals to arterial plaque formation; therefore, dietary modifications are essential—reduce intake of high-cholesterol foods and increase consumption of fresh green vegetables. If the plaques are unstable, oral statin therapy may also be prescribed.
