What Causes Numbness in the Feet, and How Is It Treated?
Disease description:
Every winter for the past few years, my feet have started going numb. What causes foot numbness, and how is it treated?
Foot numbness may be associated with peripheral neuritis, poor peripheral blood circulation, or lumbar spine disorders such as herniated intervertebral discs compressing nerves. Its incidence increases in winter due to cold weather and may also cause low back and leg pain, lower limb numbness, and weakness. It is advisable to consult a spinal surgery department at a hospital for imaging examinations (e.g., X-ray or MRI) to rule out lumbar spine disease. Treatment may include medications that promote blood circulation, resolve blood stasis, and nourish the nerves. Additionally, local heat application and soaking feet in warm water may help. Avoid overexertion and exposure to cold or wind.
