What is the difference between glimepiride and glibenclamide?
Disease description:
Before being diagnosed with diabetes, my grandfather had been taking glibenclamide to control his blood glucose levels; however, after diagnosis, he switched to glimepiride. What are the differences between glimepiride and glibenclamide?
Glimepiride is a hypoglycemic agent primarily indicated for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus whose blood glucose levels remain uncontrolled despite dietary management, exercise therapy, and weight loss. It is a synthetic sulfonylurea drug—not a traditional Chinese medicine. Glimepiride demonstrates therapeutic efficacy in patients with mild-to-moderate type 2 diabetes who fail to achieve adequate glycemic control through diet alone. It is suitable for patients whose pancreatic beta cells retain some insulin-secretory capacity and who have no severe complications.
