Can heart failure patients live longer with a pacemaker?
Disease description:
My father’s colleague has heart failure. Could you please tell me whether implanting a pacemaker in a patient with heart failure can prolong their lifespan?
If heart failure is caused by impaired cardiac pacemaker function, implanting a pacemaker can help prolong the patient’s lifespan. However, if heart failure is not due to pacemaker dysfunction—for example, if it results from inadequate coronary blood supply—pacemaker implantation will not provide effective treatment. Heart failure has multiple underlying causes, and management must target the specific primary etiology.
